Day #208: Friday the 13th (Avatar Press)

Synopsis:

There’s this group called The Organization, right? And horny teenagers who’re used as bait? Because…ah, screw it. They’re comics about Jason Voorhees killing a lot of people.

…Yeah.

My take:

Maybe you thought I’d missed my chance to capitalise on acknowledge the fact that it’s Friday the 13th when I decided to write about Halloween yesterday, but no! Oh, no no no. I knew what I was doing!*

So, yeah. Not going to lie: I’m not a huge fan of the Friday the 13th franchise as a whole. For me, it essentially represents the most base elements of the horror genre, where some bare breasts and gore are all that’s required for success; and having a coherent plot, or any kind of depth, would just get in the way.

With that in mind, the Friday the 13th comics preeeetty much fall in line with what I’d expect, except that it has the added bonus of not having to worry about the cost of blowing everything up. Which, I have to admit, actually makes me like them more than the movies. Because they’re just so silly that it’s impossible to make them seriously, I found myself more (willing and) able to just…relax and enjoy, y’know? So what if nothing in the story really stands up under any scrutiny? Everyone just got cut the hell up. I can enjoy that for what it is.**

I don’t know if I’d recommend anyone going out of their way to try and get their hands on the comics, but if you’re into that kind of thing…well, why not, hey?

Note: There were also Friday the 13th comics published by the now defunct Wildstorm publishing company, which I haven’t read. So I can’t speak to their comparative quality.

Bonus content: Here’s a play-through of the Friday the 13th NES game, because reasons.

[Edit:] BONUS bonus content: Findingmontauk has a much more forgiving and thoughtful post about Jason Vorhees over at his blog. Check it out.

* Lies. Totally didn’t notice what the date was.

** Yes, I realise I could apply this same kind of thinking to the movies. No, I probably won’t. 😛

On a final administrative note, I just wanted to let you all know that as of Monday I’m going to be pushing back posts by 4 hours, so the time of publishing lines up better with US West Coast mornings. Nothing else will be changing, but if you notice that Monday’s post goes up later than usual…that’s why.
