Annabelle (2014)

Synopsis:

[From IMDb:] A couple begins to experience terrifying supernatural occurrences involving a vintage doll shortly after their home is invaded by satanic cultists.

My take:

Watching Annabelle made me feel like one of those people who complain and complain about something, only to get what they want and still be dissatisfied.

In this case, that ‘something’ was character development, which Mia (Annabelle Wallis) got plenty of during the movie. And I do think that Wallis did a great job with the material she was given, making her a more than worthy leading lady.

I just…I was bored, okay?

Yes, the movie looked great, both in terms of the production quality and, in particular, the cinematography. The sets, the props, the costumes – all of it was great. And the music was…well, it was overused, but when it wasn’t a bit on the nose it was also good.

I just had no interest at all in the story, which seemed to be a redux of several well-worn horror movie cliches. There was even a Magical Negro character, which is fucking ridiculous, because this is a movie made in 2014, and Alfre Woodard is a multiple award winner. Why is this shit still still even a thing?! It’s insulting, and unnecessary.

The movie felt more like a collection of events that needed to happen in order to be ticked off on a list than a genuine attempt at making a movie; and that might explain why it was completely without suspense, or actual scary moments. It had the aesthetic down, it just lacked the necessary spirit.

Oh, and the ending was fucking stupid.

Man, writing that made me feel a lot better. I thought that I was being ungrateful to some degree, but there were a lot of things to dislike about Annabelle, after all. I’m glad it wasn’t just me!

P.S. WHO WOULD POSSIBLY BUY THIS FOR A CHILD?!

Other than someone who hates children, I mean.
